This is a simple overview of the wristwatch, including the parts that make up a watch, the terms used to describe a watch and the movements that power them. These pages are designed to give anyone a brief overview of watches. This is by no means a definitive codex but should help anyone in making a more informed buying decision or use it to expand your knowledge of the humble wristwatch.
I’ve broken down this resource into a few easy to digest sections. Including:
Watch Styles – A few basics to consider. Start here!
Watch Movements – A brief listing of the awesome time machines that power our watches.
Watch Cases – From sizes to shapes and materials the case is what makes the watch.
Watch Faces and Dials – The information delivery system of every watch. It takes all kinds.
Watch Straps – Holding it all together.
Watch Brands – The who’s who, broken down loosely by price.
Before anyone starts to mention a History section, I have purposefully left that out. The history of the wristwatch as well as a discussion of vintage watches will be saved for another time. I have included a few links below if you want a little background before you proceed. As always, I’m open to suggestions. Please use the contact page and drop me a note. Please know that due to spammers and volume, it may be awhile before I respond, but I try to respond to all legitimate suggestions. Also here are a couple of glossary’s of watch terms that you can use for reference.
Keep on Watching!
